Nuffield Research Placements are engaging, hands-on research projects, where students have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned at school and work alongside researchers and industry professionals.
We have been the regional co-ordinator for Nuffield Research Placements since the scheme began more than 25 years ago.
The scheme is funded by the Nuffield Foundation, who aim to encourage 17 year old students in Year 12 at school or college to consider a career in STEM research. Students who come from low income backgrounds, or those who will be the first in their family to go to university are given priority.
STEMPOINT East manage around a quarter of all student placements in the UK; we cover Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, London, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
We are looking for supervisors who can inspire talented 17-year old students
by giving them the chance to discover what a career in Social Sciences and
STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics might be like, during a
virtual summer placement in collaboration with your organisation.
Students work alongside STEM experts and professional scientists, engineers, technologists or mathematicians on a research project that you provide. Their written report is given to you at the end of the summer and supervisors are invited to a celebration event in the autumn.
The scheme will be 4 – 6 weeks, which includes some independent study for the students ahead of a 2-3 week real-world, on-site research collaboration activities with their Project Supervisor
We invite you to inspire young people to gain STEM skills through research by hosting a Nuffield Research Placement. Organisations can sign up here: https://www.nuffieldresearchplacements.org/apply-organisation-could-provide-placement
There is NO DIRECT COST for taking part – just a willingness to supervise a young person at the start of their STEM career.
